Split shows Croatia’s Adriatic coastline in spring colour

Split, a historic coastal city in southern Croatia along the Adriatic Sea, serves as a key urban and cultural centre of the Dalmatian region.

Framed by the Dinaric Alps and a rocky, irregular coastline, the area combines dense urban development with rugged limestone landscapes and patches of Mediterranean vegetation. Its coastal setting supports maritime transport, tourism, and regional economic activity, while also making the area sensitive to environmental pressures.

This image, acquired by one of the Copernicus Sentinel-2 satellites on 11 April 2026, shows Split’s built-up area, visible in red and light-grey tones, extending along the shoreline and surrounding bays. The Adriatic Sea appears in dark blue. Inland, bright green areas indicate active vegetation, while the surrounding mountains appear in muted brown and green hues, reflecting sparse vegetation and rocky terrain.

Copernicus data support detailed monitoring of coastal urban expansion, changes in land cover, and environmental conditions, contributing to sustainable coastal planning and regional management.
