A popular direct train service from Poland to Croatia’s Adriatic coast will return for a second year this summer, with additional connections in Slovenia.
The PKP Intercity service from Poland’s capital Warsaw to Rijeka, a major port city on Croatia’s northern Adriatic coast, is set to restart on June 26, with tickets going on sale on May 5.
This year, the 1,240-kilometer journey through the Czech Republic, Austria and Slovenia has been shortened by a little over 60 minutes to 18 hours.
There will be six departures each week, an increase from last year’s four and the route will operate until the end of August.
The route through Slovenia has been extended, with the train dividing into two sections in the capital, Ljubljana: one continuing to Rijeka and the other to the port city of Koper on the Slovenian coast. A bus connection to Trieste, Italy, can also be purchased together with a ticket to Koper.
Minister of Infrastructure Dariusz Klimczak said the changes had been made in response to customer demand.
“Our passengers asked us for this,” he said, adding that there has also been increased interest on other international routes, including to the Czech Republic, Germany and Lithuania.
Last summer, over 9,000 passengers traveled on the Warsaw-Rijeka route, PKP said, and interest is expected to rise as more customers opt for trains over planes and cars. More
